How this challenge is helping bring purpose to life

Meet Kim and Evelyn.

This amazing mother/daughter team have been volunteers in our Think Outside the Square Blanket Challenge since it’s inception in 2017.

Sewing close to 40 blankets in 2020 alone, these ladies are a huge asset to our blanket challenge.

When Evelyn was younger she used to do the most intricate crocheting, however these days she finds the detailed work too challenging, but is still able to create stunning fully completed blankets and squares.

Evelyn is now 84 years young but struggling with Dementia. The amazing thing is that her mind is as sharp as a tack when it comes to our community blanket challenge. She always remembers that these blankets have a purpose, and in turn, this gives Evelyn her own sense of purpose, value, and a way of keeping busy.

It’s also a special activity that she can share with her daughter Kim. “This challenge has been great for mum” said Kim, “not only does it keep her busy but it gives her something positive to focus on.”

Kim ensures that Evelyn is fully stocked with wool and helps her crochet or sew the squares together. She has been an active volunteer on this challenge herself, creating blankets and helping make sleeping mats for the homeless out of plastic.

We cannot thank Kim and her mum Evelyn enough! Our community is a much brighter place for all your contributions. 🙌
